Splintered by A.G. Howard : Book Review

Storyline Rating : 5/5 stars

Brief Summary from Goodreads :

Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

My Point of View :

This book is just wonderful! I have never read any Alice in Wonderland tale with a twist! Normally people would want to write about Cinderella, Snow White and Little Mermaid, seldom do they want to write about Alice in Wonderful. And to be honest, I never liked Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland but this book is just amazing! Totally changed my mind about the original story. I might actually go read the original before rereading this book, just to know who is who and what happened in the original story compare to this book.

The story started out a bit slow where the author took the time to introduce Alyssa, who is a descendant of Alice Liddell, how her mother landed in the asylum, her relationship with her father and Jeb, her crush and best friend. After Alyssa realized that the “voices” she heard, is not a sign of lunacy (*due to the fact her mom, Alison, heard the exact same thing she heard*) she begins to find the rabbit-hole so that she could travel to Wonderland to end this supposed “curse” that plagues her family (*ok….not her entire family, just female descendants of Alice Liddell*).

I think Alyssa survived most of the challenges in Wonderland because Jeb is with her the whole time. He is the reminder that the mortal world exists and that is like an anchor for Alyssa not to forget about the other side of her. And Morpheus! I was surprised by the fact that Alyssa’s family do not have the curse but Morpheus is the one who is cursed! Its just that Alyssa’s family (*female descendants only*) have netherling blood in them (*read the book to know what really happened*). That’s how her family get to hear the flowers’ and bugs’ “voices”.

I love the story! I love how the author reveals the secrets bits by bits which creates suspense! I love Alyssa and Jeb! I love everything! I think I’m just a fairytale addict~

P.S. Love the female descendents name in the book. It’s all “Alice” related (*Alicia, Alison and Alyssa*). Oh! Did I mention that the story sounds almost like the game I played once, Alice Madness Returns? It is just perfect! I can imagine the scenarios almost immediately.
